We can all agree that the colour ‘ruby red’ evokes a certain feeling of romance in us. Whether it’s in a lipstick, a rose, or an item of clothing or jewellery – the colour brings about a sense of passion and fire that is associated with its wearer.
As a gemstone, the ruby is said to bring exactly that – passion, power, courage and love. It oozes sophistication and intensity, and is the birthstone for those lucky babies born in July.
Andrew Mazzone states the ruby is a popular choice for jewellery pieces purchased by a significant other as a symbol of love, or by the wearer themselves as a symbol of achievement.
“There are some stunning ways to use the ruby – from a standout piece where it’s the feature, to more understated pieces where the stone is used with others such as diamonds,” he said.
The ruby is considered one of the four precious stones, along with emerald, diamond and sapphire.
In ancient times it was christened the ‘king of gems’ due to its blood red colour and believed to protect the wearer from evil, signify love and intense passion.
It was also believed to have healing properties, used to improve blood flow and circulation, as well as helping to overcome exhaustion and calm hyperactivity. Emotionally, the ruby is said to improve levels of motivation, helping to set goals and promote dynamic leadership.
In fact, some believe that if you dream of a ruby, it will bring you good luck.
The name ‘Ruby’ comes from the Latin word, ‘Ruber’, which means red. Interestingly, the stones must meet a certain intensity of red to be classified a ruby; otherwise they are named a pink sapphire.
The ruby is the traditional wedding anniversary gift for the 15th, 40th, 52nd and 80th jubilee anniversaries. It also makes for an ideal Valentine’s Day gift thanks to its romantic and passionate associations.
