Are Laboratory Grown Diamonds Real?

The simple answer is YES!
Lab grown diamonds are exactly like mined diamonds. They have a 100% identical diamond chemical composition and they look exactly the same as a mined diamond. It takes specialised equipment to detect the difference, and they are cut and graded in the same way as mined diamonds. They are not fake diamonds or diamond simulants, but synthetic diamonds that are simply grown in a laboratory.

The lab process and technology does use energy and freshwater but doesn’t involve digging up the earth, which provides a great alternative to mined diamonds for eco-conscience couples.

What is the difference between lab grown diamonds and natural mined diamonds?

The only difference between mined diamonds and lab grown diamonds is their origin. Mined diamonds come out of the earth and lab grown diamonds are made in a laboratory. Diamond simulants, such a moissanite, cubic zirconia or white sapphire to name a few, do not possess the same qualities as lab grown and mined diamonds. They are all lower on the Moh’s hardness scale meaning they don’t have the same strength and they also have different light refractive indexes meaning they do not sparkle the same.

Are all laboratory grown diamonds perfect?

As the process of creating diamonds is similar in nature and albeit much quicker in the lab— inevitably most laboratory grown diamonds will have inclusions and will vary in colour just as mined diamonds do. However, they still achieve grading and certification like mined diamonds, so you can clearly understand what you are purchasing.

Are laboratory grown diamonds more affordable?

Yes! The materials, facilities and expertise required to create laboratory grown diamonds means that they are still a luxury product like a mined diamond. But as the laboratory process is quicker, less labour intensive and they aren’t as rare as mined diamonds, you can expect to pay less.
