Considered a romantic and spiritual gem, March birthstone aquamarine is a favourite among our customers.
The blue-green sparkler is featured in a number of our beautiful pieces – from understated earrings to stunning rings, such as the one pictured above with a pear gemstone and a diamond halo.
We have a soft spot for this gorgeous coloured stone, so we thought we’d tell you a little bit about its origins and meanings.
As well as being the chosen stone for March babies, the aquamarine is the traditional 19th wedding anniversary gift. The name comes from the Latin term for ‘seawater’, which is clearly visible in the stone’s the beautiful colours.
Andrew Mazzone explained that aquamarines tend to be sky blue, pale blue, light-blue green or even a light green. The stone is actually clear, but it is the iron content in it that gives it the glow.
“Today, the most valued aquamarines are a sky blue shade, but the range of possible colours is what makes each aquamarine jewellery piece so special,” Andrew said.
The jewel is not only popular because of its colours – it is also a very affordable semi precious gem!
Aquamarines are associated with many myths and meanings, but across the board they are known for their romantic and calming qualities. In Medieval times, the stone was said to “reawaken the love of married couples”, as well as being the perfect gift for a groom to give his bride following their marriage.
In more modern times, the aquamarine is praised for having a number of positive effects on the wearer. It’s an all-purpose healing stone that can assist with fluid retention, maintaining the health of eyes, as well as meditation.
In the mental health space, it “quiets the mind, clearing extra thoughts and invokes a high state of consciousness and spiritual awareness”.
