The enviable emerald – May birthstone

It’s hard not to become green with envy when you come across a stunning emerald piece. Its dark green colour oozes beauty, sophistication and mystery. The sparkler is the official birthstone for May, with a ‘perfect emerald’ being among one of the rarest and most valuable gemstones in the world. Andrew Mazzone explained that the deeper or greener the stone is, the more valuable it is considered. Some can even be an intense green-blue shade. “The most common cut for an emerald is rectangular, but skilled jewellers can cut it into almost any shape for a bespoke piece,” Andrew said. This is also where the name behind the ‘emerald cut’ diamond comes from, with the rectangular shape being a feature in many engagement rings. The stone forms part of the four most valued gemstones – those being diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald – and has therefore been a popular choice for many years. Spiritually, the emerald is said to grant the owner good fortune, resilience, youth and foresight, also symbolising rebirth. As the gem of Venus, it was also said to aid fertility. It is considered the stone of truth and eloquence, which is something we could all benefit from! The word ‘Emerald’ is derived from the Greek word ‘smaragdus’, which quite literally means ‘green’. It’s also the traditional wedding anniversary gift for the 20th and 35th celebrations. At Andrew Mazzone Design Jeweller, the enviable emerald is featured in a number of our pieces, from rings with a diamond halo, to gorgeous natural emerald pendants and earrings (below).
