The precious peridot - August birthstone
Boasting a long history dating back as far as 1500 BC, the peridot is a classic and precious gemstone with a distinctive green glow.
The stone is said have healing powers, with qualities such as prosperity and good fortune associated with its wearer.
It is also the official birthstone for August babies, making those born in other months green with envy! Andrew Mazzone explained the peridot is widely recognised for its gorgeous hues of green – from the lighter yellow shades, to the deep olive or lime greens.

Although the origins of the peridot’s name are unknown, the Egyptians refer to it as ‘the gem of the sun’ thanks to its bright glow. The stone is formed in a similar way to diamonds, under the earth’s surface and brought up by volcanic eruptions. On rare occasions, it is also found inside meteorites! Known as ‘the evening emerald’ as it sparkles at any time of the day, peridot is a favourite for both day and night jewellery pieces. It is also the traditional wedding anniversary gift for the 16th wedding anniversary. Spiritually, ancient Romans believed that it made dreams come true, while also driving away evil spirits.
