It’s all too easy to get swept up in the magic of Christmas, so before you start seeing red and green, let us turn your mind to all things blue for the next few minutes.
We’d like to introduce you to the stunning tanzanite – the birthstone of December ladies and gents – and suitably referred to as ‘the stone of magic’.
The blue beauty boasts a recent but interesting history, and is a feature of many gorgeous jewellery pieces.
Andrew Mazzone said the tanzanite is best suited for earrings and pendants, coming in a range of cuts and sizes to suit.
“Tanzanite colours vary from pale purple to a deep, rich blue – with the deeper violets and blues being among the most valuable,” he said.
A selection of our favourite tanzanite pieces are listed below:
- Tanzanite and diamond halo stud earrings – from $710
- Tanzanite and diamond drop pendant – from $850
- Tanzanite and diamond halo ring – from $2,390
Although tanzanites are believed to have formed millions of years ago, they actually weren’t discovered until the 1960s.
Even more amazing is the fact that they’re only found in a few square kilometres of land near Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This single origin is unique for birthstones, which are usually found in multiple locations around the world.
Tiffany & Co named the stone in 1968 when they were its main distributor to link to its exclusive origins.
Today, it’s sold by jewellers all around the world as one of the more affordable gemstones, rivalling other precious gems for beauty.
Spiritually, the tanzanite is said to enhance poise, composure and harmony, and is good for stress related illnesses and lowering blood pressure.
It’s also considered the ultimate gem for workaholics, as it helps them slow down the pace of life and spend more time relaxing. Through this, it’s said to bring more success, relieving stress and depression.
The tanzanite is the traditional wedding anniversary gift for the 24th wedding anniversary, as well as making the perfect special Christmas gift for a loved one.
