With its gorgeous purple colour, there’s no wonder that February babies can’t get enough of their birthstone, amethyst.
Our jewellers have seen a range of amethysts over the years, varying from pear to brilliant cut, .50pt to 3 carats. We have designed a number of custom made pieces to signify a birthday, celebrate the birth of a February child or simply for a customer who loves the colour purple.
There’s a lot to love about amethyst, but for those who aren’t familiar we thought we’d tell you a little bit about the stunning gem.
The popular stone is a violet variety of quartz, and is the traditional gemstone for the sixth wedding anniversary gift and the Aquarius and Pisces star sign.
Andrew Mazzone explained that amethysts can range in colour, from a light, sparkling lilac, all the way through to a deep, sultry purple. They can also be transparent to translucent, giving them the enchanting reputation.
“I’ve seen some beautiful amethysts over the years – each stone has its own unique colour, and tells its own story,” Andrew said.
The name ‘amethyst’ comes with quite the story – it is derived from the ancient Greek word ‘méthystos’, which means intoxicated. The Greeks believed that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness, so they wore it and decorated their drinking dishes with it for increased sobriety.
In a spiritual sense, crystal-meaning specialist Robyn Harton explains that amethyst is a calming and meditative stone that works to promote balance and peace. Harton believes that the gemstone is beneficial when it comes to dealing with legal problems and money issues. It is also linked with spirituality, security and wisdom.
For those not familiar with birthstones, there is one associated with each month of the year. Legend has it that the birthstones have healing powers, particularly when worn during its assigned month.
